Description
A spooky and festive Witches Brew Halloween Trifle combining layers of chocolate cake, pistachio pudding, cherry cream cheese mixture, whipped cream, and playful candy toppings for a fun and eerie dessert perfect for Halloween parties.
Ingredients
Scale
Spumoni Trifle
- 1 8 inch chocolate cake or red velvet cake (store-bought, mix, or homemade)
- 2 99 g pkgs pistachio instant pudding
- 1 540 ml can cherry pie filling
- 1 8 oz pkg light cream cheese
- ½ cup sliced almonds
- 2 cups whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar
Toppings
- 20-25 large green mints (Scotch green mints)
- 5 white mints for eyeballs (Scotch white mints) or Jumbo candy eyes
- Black edible marker
- Red edible marker
- 5-10 small candy eyes
- Oreo cookie crumbs for sprinkling
Instructions
- Prepare the worms: Make the worms a day in advance as they need to set overnight (follow the specific worm recipe referenced).
- Make pistachio pudding: In a large bowl, prepare the pistachio pudding according to the package instructions.
- Whip the cream: In a large mixing bowl, beat the whipping cream until soft peaks form, then add the white granulated sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
- Prepare cherry cream cheese mixture: Beat the cream cheese for 30 seconds. Add the cherry pie filling and beat until smooth. Stir in the sliced almonds.
- Assemble the trifle: Break the cake into pieces and place them at the bottom of a cauldron or trifle dish. Spread half of the pistachio pudding over the cake. Top with the cherry cream cheese mixture, then add all of the whipped cream. Finish by spreading the remaining pistachio pudding on top.
- Create eyeball decorations: Use the black edible marker to draw black circles on white mints. Add red lines with the red edible marker for bloodshot eyes if desired, or use jumbo candy eyes instead.
- Add toppings: Place the green mints and small candy eye mints on top of the trifle. Sprinkle Oreo cookie crumbs under the worms and some on top if desired.
- Serve: Serve the trifle chilled, with the worms freshly added for a gross and creepy Halloween look.
Notes
- Make the worms a day ahead as they require setting overnight to achieve the proper texture.
- If mints are left on the trifle too long, their flavor will seep into the dessert. Add them just before serving if you prefer less mint flavor.
- Using a cauldron as the serving dish adds to the spooky Halloween presentation but a trifle bowl works well too.
- Light cream cheese is recommended to reduce richness and balance flavors.
- For easier eyeball decoration, jumbo candy eyes can be used instead of drawing on white mints.
