Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 35 waffle pretzels
- 35 Hershey Hugs (do not use Kisses, they don’t melt as well)
- Red sanding sugar
- 35 M&M’s
- Black decorating gel
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for melting the Hershey Hugs on the pretzels.
- Arrange pretzels: Lay the waffle pretzels out on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat for easy cleanup, ensuring they are in a single layer without overlapping.
- Add Hershey Hugs: Place one Hershey Hug on top of each pretzel, making sure they are centered.
- Melt the chocolate: Place the cookie sheet in the oven for 7 minutes, carefully watching them; the Hugs should become shiny and soft but not fully melted.
- Decorate with sanding sugar and M&Ms: Quickly sprinkle red sanding sugar over the softened Hugs, then place an M&M in the center of each Hug with the “M” facing down to resemble an eyeball iris.
- Add black gel pupils: Put a very small dab of black decorating gel in the center of each M&M to create the pupil, using sparingly to allow proper drying.
- Set the eyeballs: Place the assembled pretzel eyeballs in the freezer for about 1 hour to let the chocolate set and firm up before serving.
Notes
- Use Hershey Hugs instead of Kisses because they melt more smoothly and evenly.
- Watch the pretzels closely while in the oven; overheating can cause the chocolate to lose its shine and become too runny.
- Place the M&M candy “M” side down to mimic the look of an eyeball’s iris.
- Apply the black decorating gel sparingly to prevent it from taking too long to dry or smudging.
- Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Freezing helps the chocolate set quickly, ensuring the eyeballs hold their shape when handled.
