Description

A classic Apple Cobbler featuring a spiced apple filling topped with a tender, buttery cake-like topping, baked to golden perfection. Perfect served warm with vanilla ice cream for a comforting dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 6 large Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and ½ inch diced
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon powdered ginger (optional)

Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter cold, diced
  • ½ cup whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 10-inch pie dish or a 9×13 inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced Granny Smith apples, lemon juice, melted butter, granulated sugar, cinnamon, ground nutmeg, kosher salt, vanilla extract, all-purpose flour, and optional powdered ginger. Toss everything together until the apples are evenly coated with the mixture. Transfer this filling into your prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  3. Make the topping: In another mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Cut in the cold diced butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Gradually add the whole milk a little at a time, mixing gently until the dough reaches a wet cake batter consistency.
  4. Assemble the cobbler: Drop spoonfuls of the topping dough over the apple filling, trying to cover as much surface as possible but it’s okay if some apples peek through.
  5. Bake the cobbler: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  6. Serve and enjoy: Let the cobbler cool slightly before serving warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, substitute melted butter and whole milk with coconut oil and almond milk respectively.
  • If Granny Smith apples are not available, tart apples like Honeycrisp or Braeburn work well.
  • Adding powdered ginger is optional but adds a nice warmth to the filling.
  • Use fresh lemon juice for best flavor and to prevent apples from browning.
  • Ensure the butter for the topping is cold to achieve the crumbly texture.
